Publishers putting their work online usually pick one of two things: a PDF with zoom and arrows, or a generic flipbook. Neither feels like reading. Mariscal Books is a sample digital publisher with a reader that does what a book in your hands does, plus a few things a book can't.
A comic that reads itself
On the home page, a hardback comic opens in 3D as you scroll. There's a shelf with the five issues in the collection, a manifesto that lights up word by word and a wall of all forty pages. Tap a cover and you're in the reader: the page bends and turns, a voice tells the story and highlights each word as it's spoken, and when it reaches the end of the page, it turns it for you. You can highlight, stick a note on a panel, read the translated speech bubbles and use the magnifier.
Why it works for a publisher
Readers who listen, mark things up and come back are readers who buy the next issue. Synced audio opens your catalogue to kids who are just learning to read and to people studying a language. And the reader genuinely works on a phone, one page at a time, which is where people read at night.
